What does 'development' mean?

The concept of development is constantly changing its meaning. In the 60s it clearly referred to economic development and the reducing of the gap between poor and rich. It then became 'poverty reduction' and 'growth', and is now evolving towards 'wellbeing' and 'happiness'... while in the meantime security policies are taking over. We have to oppose this constant downgrading of the ambitions and the militarization of development cooperation.

Social Forum of the Human Rights Council

From August 31st to September 2nd 2009, the UN Human Rights Council organized a Social Forum with civil society. Dr Francine Mestrum was invited to speak on the negative impact of the crisis on the efforts to combat poverty. She mentioned the potential of social protection and income support measures, as well as a human rights approach to illegal practices on financial markets and the need to re-think global solidarity.
